HAROLD CHAPMAN PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION - 80th birthday celebration
Friday 29th to Thursday 12th July The Royal Hotel, Deal
Exhibition of photography by one of the world's foremost photographers.  Born in Deal, Harold Chapman moved to Paris, where he lived at The Beat Hotel together with formative artists and writers such as William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg.   The exhibition will show some of his most famous works.

Fanfares from the ramparts of Deal Castle start our street music events, which take place on each Saturday of the Festival.

"India through British Eyes"
In his highly distinguished diplomatic career, Sir David Goodall had senior posts in Nicosia, Djakarta, Bonn and Nairobi as well as India. He gives his impressions of India as he came to know it as a diplomat and in his travels, and offers a perspective on the changes which have taken place in the last fifteen years and the problems which still confront the country.
NORMA WINSTONE AND GWILYM SIMCOCK
Sunday 1st July, 7.30pm St. George's Church, Deal
Norma Winstone, one of the leading jazz singers of her generation, joins with Gwylim Simcock, a rising star of European jazz and the first ever jazz BBC New Generation Artist,  in a concert of songs, both popular and less familiar. They premiere of a new song cycle by Gwylim Simcock (to poems by the Beat Poets), specially commissioned by the Deal Festival.

PATRICIA DEBNEY Poet-in-Residence
Monday 2nd July, 6.30pm Turner Contemporary at Droit House, Stone Pier, Margate
Debney's How to be a Dragonfly won the 2004 Poetry Business book and Pamphlet competition.  She has recently written the libretto for the chamber opera The Juniper Tree which was premiered in London and Munich by Almeida Opera and the London Sinfonietta. She reads poems by herself, as well as new poems, many by local writers.

Jean Luc Godard's celebrated film is something of an indictment of modern times. It is a triptych that takes us to three "kingdoms" - Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.

Gypsy, Greek, Klezmer, Tango and Rebetiko music.
Kosmos is a new, innovative ensemble inspired by traditional music from Eastern Europe and the Middle East. They intoxicate their audience with entrancing dance rhythms, soulful improvisation and gypsy passion delivered with panache and virtuoso technique.

STEVEN ISSERLIS CELLO MASTERCLASS

International artist and one time Artistic Director of Deal Festival leads a cello masterclass with students from the Yehudi Menuhin School.  This provides an exceptional opportunity for young musicians from the area to witness the highest standards of performance by young people.

Heroes and Heroines
Arias, songs, duets and ensembles telling of noble deeds and courtly characters, less than glorious failures and shadowy mishaps will be interspersed with readings, and the concert will also feature a heroic appearance of pupils from Sir Roger Manwood School.

BAND OF THE ROYAL MARINES

The famous band comes to Deal to give a rousing concert of music, including 'Beating the Retreat'.   This events attracts a vast audience and is one of the high-spots in the area's cultural calendar.  Bring your picnic, bring a party, and enjoy the experience!

Emma Kirkby and Anthony Rooley are two of the greatest legends of early music performance. Words take over and music begins. The Four Quartets stand as our greatest war poems and as the finest poetic monument of twentieth century English. Tonight's performance includes four specially commissioned quartets from Stephen Clee, Stuart Duncan, Andrew Larner and Mark Lawrence, performed by outstanding young musicians from Canterbury Christ Church University.

AFRICAN CHILDREN'S CHOIR

The African Children's Choir is one of the great youth choirs of the world, and an ambassador for all the children in Africa who have become orphans due to AIDS, poverty and famine. They delight their audiences giving concerts in venues that range from the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels to the Houses of Parliament and the Proms, with programmes that are a colouful mix of song and dance from many regions of Africa with popular, gospel and contemporary music. We are truly privileged that they have agreed to end our 25th anniversary festival.
